Make yours from clothes in your wardrobe or clothes from the local charity shop.
Ladies sailor fancy dress
A black or navy mini skirt, teamed with a white top or blouse makes a great lady’s sailor costume. Don’t wear a fitted skirt, find one that has some material in it; a pleated mini skirt would be ideal for this costume. Drape a red or navy scarf around your neck, tied sailor fashion. Wear white stockings and a pair of blue or red high heeled shoes. You can wear your hair in any style you wish, and top it off with a sailor hat.
You can make a ladies sailor hat from a white beret and a piece of red ribbon. Tie the ribbon into a bow and using a safety pin attach the bow to the beret. Wear the hat so the ribbon is lying to one side.
Men’s sailor fancy dress
If you have a pair of black, or navy, trousers, and a black, or navy, V-necked sweatshirt, you can make your own sailor costume.
You’ll need an old handkerchief or shirt to cut up for stripes, some iron-on tape to attach the stripes, and fabric paints to colour a motif.
Cut four strips of fabric from the handkerchief or old shirt, long enough to wrap around the cuffs of the sweatshirt. Use some iron-on tape to attach two white stripes around each cuff.
Cut two more strips, long enough to go around the neckline of the sweatshirt and use the iron-on tape to secure them in place.
Create a motif by drawing with fabric paints onto a handkerchief and cutting a circle around the motif. An anchor is a good emblem to use for your motif. Attach this with the iron–on tape to the top of one of the sleeves.
Add a black neck tie and tie this in a sailors knot around your neck.
If you are going to a party as a couple, then wear complementing sailor costumes. If you really want to liven things up, wear each others costumes!
