70s Fancy Dress

Need some 70’s fancy dress ideas? Have a look at our tips for putting some 70’s costumes together.

The secret to men’s 70’s fancy dress is to ask your dad or granddad if they have any retro clothing in their wardrobes. Dressed as a 70’s man, you can wear psychedelic shirts, printed shirts and platform shoes. Wear them with a pair of straight leg jeans. Straight leg jeans are easy to find; you may already have some in your wardrobe. Just add the bright shirt and some accessories.

Men’s Hawaiian shirts – you can go to a 70’s fancy dress party dressed in flared jeans and a Hawaiian shirt. No, Hawaiian shirts weren’t just for holidays! Men actually wore these shirts for everyday wear, and thought they looked hip. If your dad, or granddad, hasn’t got a printed shirt tucked away somewhere, have a look at charity shops or surf shops. You can turn it into a 70’s costume by adding some cool accessories. Dark sunglasses, a thick moustache and platform shoes will give your outfit the 70’s feel. Any colour combination of trousers and shirt looks good

70’s disco costume – Wear a pair of straight cut jeans, black or blue jeans are good, and a shirt that is too large for you; find a shirt of dad’s that’s too big - a bold coloured or black silky one is ideal. Tuck it into your trousers, and wear a large showy belt with a large buckle. If you think Elvis style, you won’t go far wrong. Unbutton at least four of the top buttons of the shirt and wear a long golden medallion.

Hippie costume – For a cool hippie style costume, wear a maxi skirt, teamed with a peasant style blouse and plenty of long beaded necklaces. The skirt and blouse can be plain or patterned; the 70’s fabric gave us a great choice in patterns and floral materials. Alternatively wear a halter neck maxi dress with thongs or flip flops. Leave your hair long and flowing and pin some fresh flowers behind your ears. Long beads, leather necklaces and bracelets will finish your outfit.

Dallas fancy dress, Crystal Carrington style – find a blouse that’s two sizes too large for you, a silk plain blouse is ideal. If you haven’t got any shoulder pads lying about in your sewing kit, make a couple by rolling up two pairs of old tights, and attaché them to the shoulders, with safety pins or use a tacking stitch to hold them in place. Wear a tight skirt with the blouse tucked in, and then pull some of the blouse fabric out, to wear over the top of the skirt. Wear pearl earrings and necklace to finish off your Dallas costume.
