Being invited to a fancy dress party was great; I’ve never been invited to a real fancy dress party before. Not that I’ve never been to fancy dress party, we’ve had fancy dress parties at home but that was different, we knew everyone, they were friends that we’d grown up with and relatives that we had no choice but to invite, not that they dressed up, thinking back I could have said that they were dressed up as the old fogies that sat in a corner that you used to see in those old black and white films, they never spoke or smiled just sat there, glum.
Everyone else made an effort to come in some form of fancy dress, there was always someone in an Andy Pandy costume, a cowboy costume made up with a checked shirt a pair of jeans and a cowboy hat and if they were really inventive they came with their kid’s cowboy gun slingers guns firing off caps all night. Some people altered pyjamas into Pirate Fancy Dress or sailor fancy dress. There were always one or two that thought fancy dress meant that they could come as “themselves”.
There was always one that came as a cardboard box and that’s what he wore, nothing else, he was always found in the kitchen chatting up the Tinkerbell fancy dress or was it a Fairy costume come to think of it, I suppose it could have even been an elf costume, it was a green mini skirt, tight green t-shirt well filled and a bit of glitter, well it was the seventies and early eighties. There was one couple that did actually buy their fancy dress outfit, they came in Witches costumes and had bought a Witches mask to go with it and the witches hat.
Our fancy dress parties were never themed; it was a case of we’re having a party, it’s a fancy dress party so if you or the kids want to dress up you can, just bring what your drinking.
This on the other hand was an organised fancy dress party, it had a theme, and you have to dress up in anything that was out in the seventies and eighties. This was going to be easy, all I have to do is go on the internet, type in seventies fancy dress or eighties fancy dress and there will be loads of online fancy dress shops with hundreds of ideas.
