When you hear the word ‘pirate’ you automatically think of a male pirate. If you were asked to name 2 Pirates from the movies you can surely come up with a few such as Jack Sparrow, Hook, Blackbeard etc, but what if you were asked to name 2 female Pirates from the movies? It’s a lot harder but they are featured. The 1995 hit movie Cutthroat Island saw Geena Davis as the female pirate Morgan Adams. This movie saw Geena Davis in a few different Ladies pirate fancy dress costumes. She sometimes wore something a little more girly like the long, white, off-the-shoulder maiden dress, or she would sometimes wear a more original male pirate costume with black or brown knee length pants, a baggy white or brown shirt, and a large belt around the waist holding her gun and sword. She sometimes added to these costumes by wearing a long black military style coat with a red scarf tide around the middle. One of the best costumes she sported in this movie was the fantastic Ladies pirate fancy dress costume which is a brown and red off-the-shoulder corset dress. The corset top gave the costume a more feminine look but it still had all the character of a pirate costume. The lower dress half flared out and with red tights and pirate boots, this outfit was truly the ultimate ladies Pirate Fancy Dress costume.
A more recent film which showed a strong female pirate figure is Penelope Cruz in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as Angelica. Penelope Cruz wears a great range of strong ladies Pirate Fancy Dress costumes. One of Penelope’s costumes includes an off-the-shoulder white puff shirt, a fitted black waist coat, a longer black and gold loose waist coat over the top, black skinny trousers, knee high black leather pirate boots, and a black pirate hat. The outfit changes slightly from scene to scene with Penelope sometimes wearing a long leather red coat with a black collar. Penelope Cruz’s hair adds dramatically to the overall look of the costume, long, brown and wavy it gives a real authentic look to the costume as a whole.
When it comes to women in pirate movies they are far and few between, of course women feature in the movie but not as actual pirates they play other roles such as the love interest or maidens in distress. These characters wear ladies maiden style costumes of dresses or corset tops and skirts. Real Pirate Costumes for the ladies are not as featured unless you take into account the lady characters mentioned above. Despite the lack of female lead pirates there are many ladies Pirate Fancy Dress costumes available to rent or buy. These costumes are based on the clothes worn by men and worn by the Geena Davis and Penelope Cruz characters. The costumes include a pirate hat, a tapered ladies pirate jacket, the dress or top and skirt and pirate boots. There are of course many alternatives such as with knee high trousers or shorts, tights or leggings, Accessories such as swords and guns, bandanas and scarves and so on.
