Kid’s love to dress up, and there are lots of kids fancy dress costumes you can make for them, to wear to parties or holidays. If you need a few ideas, check out some of our tips for costume making.
Making kids fancy dress
Fairytales – To turn a pretty party dress into a Fairy costume, just add a pair of wings. Let her wear her white tights and ballet pumps. If your daughter goes to ballet lessons, her tutu is perfect for a Fairy dress. Let her carry a wand and add some sparkly face make up. If you have a green tutu, she can be a woodland fairy or Tinkerbell.
Home made fairy wand - Have some fun making a home-made wand from an empty kitchen roll tube, glue, a cornflake box and some aluminum foil. Coat the tube in glue and cover with the foil. Cut out a star shape for the top of the wand and cover with foil in the same manner. Use a stapler to attach the star to the top of the wand. Small children love making things, and they’ll love this wand.
Film and TV fancy dress ideas – The Indiana Jones character makes a great boy’s costume. Take a pair of beige or brown trousers, and add a matching shirt. Add a pair of black School shoes and an ‘Indie’ hat. You may have to buy the hat, or ask friends if they have one in their child’s dressing up box. Finish this kids fancy dress off with a gun and holster.
Childrens fancy dress Uniforms – You can dress boys or girls in a favourite football team or Sports uniform. Let him wear the official kit, and paint his face with the team’s colours. Go online for some inspiration for face painting ideas. Add a ‘Zorro’ type mask to turn him into a superhero. You can easily make this from an old cornflake box, a piece of elastic and some paints. Cut out the mask with eye holes and paint it black. Make two holes for the elastic to go through with a needle or pair of scissors. Thread the elastic and knot the ends to stop it slipping through. Thread the elastic so the knots are on the outside of the mask.
Disney fancy dress – Disney character costumes are difficult to make, unless you are a keen seamstress. But most children have at least one Disney fancy dress costume at the bottom of their dressing up box. This is perfect for a Halloween costume or a kids fancy dress party. Invite your friends to a ‘fancy dress exchange party’ and get everyone to bring their children’s outgrown costumes. You can make a small charge for any costumes that are bought, and donate the proceeds to your favourite charity.
Halloween – You can make a great bat costume from an old walking waterproof cape. Cut off the hood and adjust the length so it falls just below his knees. Make the hem as straight as possible, so you can leave it raw. Glue some Velcro at the neck-opening to use as a fastener. You can make a bat mask from a piece of painted cardboard with eye holes cut out, and a piece of elastic to hold the mask in place. He can wear black trousers and a black shirt or sweater underneath.
