Fancy dress is all about dressing up as someone else and realistically portraying their look and character. It is quite common today to attend fancy dress parties where a competition is held for the best costume. This adds a bit of friendly competition to the night and gives people an incentive to really go for it with their costumes. Here are some tips and advice to help you along your way when it comes to fancy dress competitions.
1. Be Fancy Dress Unique – due to the popularity of fancy dress costumes some outfits can be a little over done and predictable especially if there is a theme to the fancy dress party. For example the Witches costume at a Halloween party, or the hippie look at a 60’s themed fancy dress event. A great way to wow the crowds is to be unique and dress in a costume that no one has ever seen. 2. Variety is the Spice of Life – you may be thinking there are only so many costumes or ideas to choose from, especially if the theme of the fancy dress party is quite linear, but how about taking a popular costume and transforming it slightly to make you stand out. For example a movie themed night, a popular outfit is Sandy in the Pink Ladies outfit from Grease, instead of going in the famous pink jacket and black skinny trousers look why not go for the Sandra Dee look, the sweet blonde bob hairdo and the girly all American yellow dress, white ankle socks and shoes. There is more than one way to skin a cat as they say so get your thinking caps on and try and reinvent the wheel, you’ll get credit for it. 3. Change Sex – a great way to catch people’s attention is to dress in a costume that is meant for the opposite sex. So if you are a gal you can look at some Robin Hood costumes, or maybe a cowboy, or Freddie Mercury, or Michael Jackson, and if you are a guy look at Marilyn Monroe, Cinderella, or Maid Marion. 4. It’s the Little Touches that make the Big Difference – go for detail with your costume. Anyone can bang on a costume they have ordered from a fancy dress website which is fine, but if you want to stand out for the competition take a look at some pictures of the character you are trying to represent and pick out some subtle aspects you can incorporate into your costume. It’s the finishing touches that count. 5. DIY Fancy Dress Costume – make the costume yourself to give you extra brownie points, it shows you have put time and effort into your costume and it’ll show massively in the end result, it’ll be a sure winner.
