Nowadays it is quite common to pop along to your local fancy dress store to hire a costume or to search websites online and buy your own. But this never used to be the case a few years ago; going back several decades it was always your mum or guardian who would put together a fancy dress costume for you. Using old clothes, bits of fabric and the old sewing machine a truly magnificent costume would be made and beautifully unique to you none the less. So what is better, a package fancy dress costume or a DIY outfit?
Well its safe to say that a package fancy dress costume is a quicker option, it doesn’t take half as much time looking around the shops and online for your chosen outfit than it does to create one from scratch. Bought or hired costumes have the added bonus of having all the right logos and badges as well. For example if you were to dress up as a police officer you would wear black trousers, a white shirt, and buy yourself a gun, with a packaged police officer costume it would have a play version of the police badge on the shirt and the trousers would look more authentic and the hat would be a proper police hat and so on but you pay for the privilege. A downside to the fake badges and play hats is that it is just that, fake, the badges and hats are made from plastic and are obviously for dress up and do not portray a life like feel to the costume.
DIY costumes are fabulous because although they do take more time to create this time and effort really shows in the end result. You can ask around friends and family for bits and bobs for the costume depending on where they work and their vocation, for example if you are making a Doctors costume your friend who is a nurse could lend you a stethoscope or their scrubs. Visiting fabric and sewing shops allsorts of badges and motives can be found. A fighter pilot outfit is a perfect DIY costume, all you need is a pair of overalls and several Army and air badges to sew on to the upper body of the outfit and the result would be a very real looking pilot costume, eat your heart out Tom Cruise!
It is entirely your own preference whether or not you go for a packaged outfit or a home made one, some prefer to save time and buy one so they have everything they need for the outfit and others like to put their own spin on it and put it together themselves. Either way you are bound to look the part and wow the crowd.
