We’ve all had to find a 70s fancy dress costume at some time. Whether it was a seventies party or disco night, you will have needed to recreate the cool disco look. This era gave us diversity and colour, which makes it a popular theme for parties. Based on the seventies film and music industries, there is something for everyone in this genre.
Seventies men wore bold colours and psychedelic patterns. Black was also a favourite, especially for shirts and trousers. Floral shirts sporting large lapels were teamed with flared trousers for everyday wear. Disco clothes were flamboyant with the iconic white suit usually reserved for the disco.
Disco kings, pop stars and icons dazzled us with glitzy clothes and accessories. Elaborate decorations adorned jeans and tops. We studded, sequinned, ripped and patched our jeans and T shirts. In fact it was so popular that in 1973 Levi’s held a Denim Art Contest for all the arty fans. Glam rockers, punks and disco Ladies sent in photos of their finished jeans. Groovy stuff!
And it was in 1978 when Calvin Kline introduced us to designer denim. It set off a mad spell of denim mania. Hats, shoes, bags and jackets were all in fashion. If it could be made in denim, it was; and if you are trying to recreate a 70s fancy dress look, then the denim patchwork flares are ideal.
